Measuring poverty using fuzzy set theory: Turkish case
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the literature, The most mentioned issues about measuring poverty are its multi dimensionality and vagueness. Besides traditional approaches fuzzy approaches are widely employed. In this study fuzzy index of poverty (FIP) is calculated for Turkey based on approximately 25000 households. The indicators are disposable income, food expenditure, clothing and footwear expenditures and habitable area per person.

A new fuzzy one-dimensional poverty index based on a relative entropy
In order to avoid the usual binary definition of poverty, a fuzzy set approach to poverty measurement has been used. The poor are typically analyzed by partitioning the total population in three mutually exclusive groups around the poverty line. This builds on fuzzy sets theory whereby the definition of the threshold of who is poor or non-poor, is fuzzy. This paper presents a method that consis...
متن کاملPanel Regression Models for Measuring Multidimensional Poverty Dynamics
This work is related to the studying of poverty dynamics and the analysis of the socio-demographic factors influencing it. We have chosen a fuzzy and multidimmensional approach in order to define two different poverty measures. A panel regression model has been estimated and particular attention has been paid to the treatment of the unobservable heterogeneity among longitudial units. The specif...
متن کاملMeasuring Multidimensional Poverty: an Empirical Comparison of Various Approaches
This paper makes a systematic comparison of four approaches to multidimensional poverty analysis based respectively on the theory of fuzzy sets, information theory, efficiency analysis and axiomatic derivations of poverty indices. The database was the 1995 Israeli Census that provided information on the ownership of various durable goods. There appears to be a fair degree of agreement between t...

The international donor community has grave concerns about the prospects for poverty reduction in what it terms fragile states. A state is classified as fragile if its country policy and institutional assessment (CPIA) score falls below a particular threshold. Recognizing that all states are fragile to varying degrees, this paper questions the method used by the international community to deem ...
